AirDrop is a fantastic function on Apple devices that allows you to instantaneously transfer documents, photos, and other anything from one device to another via Wi-Fi.
Transferring files in this manner has numerous advantages, including the fact that it is faster, needs fewer steps, and, perhaps most importantly, does not impair the quality of any media that is delivered.
To send files via AirDrop, the sender must select a name from a list of potential nearby devices on their screen. If you don’t have a memorable name, it can make the task more difficult.
Fortunately, you can alter your AirDrop name from your iPhone’s settings menu by changing the name of your device. So, whether you want to make your phone easier to recognize or just make it hilarious to make people laugh, the technique is extremely straightforward.
Here’s how to go about it.
You can modify your AirDrop ID so that people see something other than your name. This post will show you how to alter the name of your AirDrop on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
How to Change Your Name on iPhone AirDrop
Changing your iPhone’s AirDrop name requires a change that you may not want to make. Fortunately, this is not the case on the iPad or Mac, as we’ll discover in the next sections.
On the iPhone, AirDrop uses the name you have in your Contacts card. Changing your name there affects how you appear in AirDrop, but it also affects all other applications that access your contact card. For example, if we wanted to alter the AirDrop name from “Sam” to “Mister X,” Safari would use “Mister X” as the first name whenever it tried to autofill the name in a form on a website. Possibly irritating!
However, if you want to alter your name in AirDrop on your iPhone, follow these steps:
- Launch the Contacts app. (or open Phone and tap Contacts).
- At the top of the list, tap your name.
- Select Edit.
- Tap your initial name, then the x to delete what’s already there.
- Enter your desired new first name and tap Done to save it.
In AirDrop, you may also modify the photo that shows with your name. Edit to change your profile photo. However, keep in mind that this changes the profile photo in your Apple ID and will sync to all devices that use this Apple ID.
Your AirDrop name has now been changed. However, it only affects this iPhone and does not sync to other devices. When using AirDrop, the change may take a few minutes to register on other people’s devices.
We have plenty of more AirDrop hints, such as how to use AirDrop without Wi-Fi and what to do if AirDrop isn’t working.
How to Change Your Name with iPad AirDrop
The procedure for changing your name on an iPad differs from that of an iPhone. It does not entail altering your contact information. Instead, you change the name of your iPad (which is better because it is less disruptive than changing your contact information). Here’s what you should do:
- Select Settings.
- Select General.
- Select About.
- Select Name.
- Tap the x to remove your iPad’s current name and enter in the new one.
- When you’re finished, press the Done button on the keyboard, the back arrow in the top left, or both. The new name you gave your iPad will now appear in AirDrop.
This name is used everywhere your iPad’s name appears, not only AirDrop. That name, for example, appears in Find My and, if you sync your iPad to a computer, the new name appears in Finder or iTunes.
How to Change Your Name in Mac AirDrop
Changing your AirDrop name on a Mac differs from changing it on an iPhone or iPad, albeit it is very similar to the iPad version. Simply follow these steps:
- Click the Apple menu in the upper left corner of the screen, then System Preferences.
- Select Sharing.
- Delete your computer’s current name and replace it with the new name you want to use in the Computer Name field.
Tip: This modifies the computer’s name for all networked sharing applications, not only AirDrop.
When you’ve chosen the ideal name, close the window to save it. Now, whenever you use AirDrop on this Mac, that new name will be displayed.
On an iPhone, how do I enable AirDrop?
Open the Control Center on your iPhone, then press and hold the area that contains the various icons to expand it and enable AirDrop. To activate the function, tap the icon for AirDrop. Choose either Everyone or Contacts Only. You can also activate it by going to Settings > General > AirDrop.
On a Mac, how do I activate AirDrop?
Open Finder on your Mac and select Go > AirDrop to enable AirDrop. Choose who you want to be able to find your Mac at the bottom of the window, such as Contacts Only. AirDrop now allows you to send and receive files.
Where do photos from AirDrop go?
Photos that are AirDropped to an iPhone go to the Photos app. Similar to this, every file that is delivered to you via AirDrop will be saved in the app that is appropriate for it on your iPhone. Photos that have been AirDropped to a Mac are kept in the Downloads folder.
How can I disable AirDrop?
You can disable AirDrop if you no longer want to receive photographs or files through it. Open the Control Center by swiping downward from the top right. Then, tap the upper left control group, the AirDrop symbol, and Receiving Off. If you need help activating AirDrop, refer to this post.
You now understand how to alter the name that appears in AirDrop on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. If you use my stupid example of “Send Me Dog Pics,” this will be the name of your device on Find My and everywhere else as well. Just keep in mind that changing your AirDrop name can also change how your device is listed in other places. You might now wish to find out how to modify or alter the Admin name on your Mac.
