Last weekend, the improved Su-57 5th generation stealth fighter took its inaugural flight at the Zhukovsky flight test centre outside Moscow. The flight was uneventful and without incident.

The improved Su-57 fighter jet took its first flight on October 21 at the Zhukovsky flight test centre in Zhukovsky, according to United Aircraft enterprise (UAC), a subsidiary of Russia’s state enterprise Rostec. Moscow. The aircraft was piloted by Sukhoi Design Bureau test pilot Sergey Bogdan No. 1. The flight lasted 56 minutes and was uneventful.

The Su-57 stealth fighter also tested equipment with extended features on the aircraft, artificial intelligence (AI) systems to help pilots. And the capacity to utilise a variety of new weaponry, according to the UAC.

Intelligent assistance system

The intelligent assistance system allows the computer on board the Su-57 to handle the aircraft, allowing the pilot to focus on more vital tasks.

According to UAC General Director Yuri Slyusar, the aircraft takes control and prepares to fire armaments. In addition, the aircraft has a high level of intelligent automation in battle.

Nikita Dorofeev, chief of the cockpit department at the Sukhoi Design Bureau. Said in July 2021 that Su-57 pilots would be able to control the aircraft in the future via eye motions or voice commands. Although such a system would be extremely difficult because the human student moves involuntarily all the time, this archetype currently exists.

According to Dorofeev, the present objective is to educate the system to grasp context rather than specific phrases. So that “pilots don’t need to remember the exact phrase they have to pronounce” in harsh situations.

Sukhoi Design Bureau test pilot Rafael Suleimanove believes the intelligent support system lets the Su-57 to “do anything in the air.”

“Driving the Su-57 is a pleasurable and comfortable experience.” It enables pilots to perform all tasks in the air. These characteristics, combined with formidable armaments, enable pilots to accomplish operations both in the air and on the ground, in any weather conditions, at any latitude, day or night. “All of these factors combine to make the Su-57 a formidable weapon,” stated pilot Suleimanove.

Furthermore, Sukhoi aircraft generations are fairly similar. Su-35 pilots are also capable of flying 5th generation jets.

Su-57 – Stage 2 motor

The Su-57 was supposed to be fitted with the Izdeliye 30 engine, which would allow it to fly at supersonic speeds without the use of a fuel-intensive afterburner. The Su-57, on the other hand, was built and tested using the NPO Saturn Product 117 engine. Which is based on the AL-41F-1S afterburner turbojet engine developed for the Su-35.

The Izdeliye 30 will increase the Su-57 fighter’s thrust and fuel economy while lowering weight and maintenance costs. On December 5, 2017, the Izdeliye 30 engine was tested for the first time. Following that, this engine underwent extensive flight testing. As of October 2019, the Izdeliye 30 engine had completed 16 test flights on a modified Su-57.

According to Yuri Slyusar, General Director of UAC, the second stage engine is undergoing extensive testing, according to the Russian publication Izvestia in December 2019. The engine was flight tested to ensure proper thrust vectoring. And its oil system was evaluated in both unfavourable flying and combat circumstances.

An employee of the Sukhoi Design Bureau stated to TASS in September 2022 that, unlike the 4th generation fighter. The Su-57 can sustain supersonic speed on most missions, even during combat.

“If 4th generation aircraft spend most of their time at subsonic speeds and perform specific combat missions at supersonic speeds. Then the Su-57 is designed to spend the majority of its ‘lifecycle’ at supersonic flight speed,” a Sukhoi Design Department employee explained.

Su-57 – Ukraine‘s Activities

On October 18, the Russian Defence Ministry issued a statement on the employment of Su-57 fighter aircraft in a special military operation in Ukraine.

“In terms of combat effectiveness, I especially want to choose a fifth-generation multirole aircraft,” General Sergei Surovikin, commander-in-chief of Russia’s military operations in Ukraine, stated. According to him, the integration of many weapons may solve multiple jobs at once, allowing each sortie to strike both air and ground targets.

According to General Surovlin’s statements. The Su-57 is utilised in both fighter and attack roles, and it is successful in both.

Previously, Russian Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu stated in an August interview on the Rossiya-1 channel that the Su-57 stealth fighter had displayed “high self-defence capabilities against many air defence systems and missiles” during the Ukrainian war.

“The most important aspect is that the Su-57 is armed with extremely powerful weapons.” “We tested those weapons, and they all work fantastically; there are no other words to describe it,” Shoigu remarked. He did not, however, identify what weapons the Su-57 employed in Ukraine or how successful they were.

Rostec said at the end of September that Russia is speeding up the manufacture of Su-57 warplanes. The new aircraft will be handed to the Russian Aerospace Forces soon.

According to Rostec head Sergei Chemezov. The Su-57 is in high readiness and will be handed to the Russian Aerospace Forces this year.
