How to check for bed bugs?

Hotel rooms are bound to be vulnerable to bed bug infestations with thousands of travelers traveling through their doorways each year. These unwanted visitors can find their way into even five-star lodgings.

You should always inspect hotel rooms for bed bugs to prevent an infestation.

  1. Use bed insect eggs, casings, and stains to identify the pests. Remember that crushed deceased bed bugs often leave reddish-brown stains on a mattress or area of bedding. Another clear indication of bed insect activity is the presence of tiny white eggs or light yellow casings. Small and brown bed bugs that are currently alive can be seen moving all over the sleeping areas.
  2. Check for pests on the exposed box spring and mattress. Remove all blankets, pillows, and sheets, including any elastic blankets that go around the cushion. Be on the lookout for any outward indications of bed bugs, such as larvae or the bugs themselves. Additionally, look for reddish-brown stains on the mattress or hard bug-shedding casings, both of which are indicators of an invasion.
  3. Light your torch and look underneath the mattress. Ask a friend or member of your family to assist you raise the mattress by using one arm. Initiate a lighting search on your phone and proceed along the mattress’s base. Look for any noticeable stains or splotches, as well as any eggs or casings, beneath the cushion.
  4. Check for bed bug movement in the sheets and bedding. Check for stains or other bed insect indications by removing the quilt or duvet. Check the other blankets and sheets as an additional precaution to make sure bed bugs haven’t taken up residence there.
  5. Backlight your bed or nightstand. The lighting on your phone should be turned on and held behind the headboard of your bed and the back of your nightstand. A clear indication that your room is infested is the presence of any bugs crawling away.
  6. Verify any additional furnishings in the space for bedbugs. Look closely at any sofas, recliners, or other seating arrangements in the space. Pay particular attention to the seams because bed bugs like to congregate there. Take a moment or two to check the entire surface of the chair or sofa before setting any clothing or other luggage on it.
  7. Peer through the drapes. Verify the curtains and any side openings in your room. Make sure the drapes are in good condition by straightening them out and looking at each fold and crease. Again, be on the lookout for any icky spots or bug stains.
  8. Look over the rack of baggage for any evidence of bug activity. Examine the baggage rack or valet cart in your room more closely. In addition to any lingering casings, look for indications of alive bugs. Even though this isn’t a typical bed bug center, these racks can harbor bed bugs from other people’s possessions.
  9. Check for pests by raising framed artwork. Pick up each framed image and move it as far away from the wall as you can. While removing the painting, keep an eye out for any live insects that might be flinging themselves about; these vermin will occasionally find refuge there.
  10. Examine both the exterior and interior of the table. Examine the nightstand’s screw holes and exterior edges while on your knees. In addition to their eggs and casings, keep an eye out for any indications of live bugs, as you have in the past. Additionally, look inside each compartment for any indications of insect activity.
