The Denver Nuggets overcame a 15-point halftime deficit to win 113-111 on Monday night and sweep the Los Angeles Lakers in four games, making their first appearance in the NBA Finals in their 47-year existence.
Center At Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena, Nikola Jokic led the way with 30 points, 14 rebounds, and 13 assists. Jokic now has eight postseason triple-doubles, which puts him one more than Wilt Chamberlain for the most ever in one playoff run.
With little over a minute remaining, the two-time MVP Jokic made the game-winning shot to give the Nuggets a 113-111 lead. On the defensive end, Denver was able to keep the Lakers’ star player LeBron James from tying the score twice. The last time came on the game’s final possession when Nuggets forward Aaron Gordon stopped James’ layup attempt as time ran out.
James, who scored 21 points in the first quarter, finished with 40 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in the loss.
The Western Conference’s top-seeded Nuggets will next face the winner of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics. The Heat lead the series 3-0 and could close out the Celtics on Tuesday night in Miami.
Prior to Monday, the Nuggets had reached the conference finals five times (1978, 1985, 2009, 2020), losing all four times to the Lakers.
