Former 10-time All-Star and six-time All-NBA pick Carmelo Anthony announced his retirement from the NBA on Monday. Anthony, the third overall choice in the 2003 NBA Draught, played in the NBA for 19 seasons before making his final appearance in a game as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers last season.
He leaves the league as the ninth-highest scorer ever. Only a few players have amassed more points than Anthony, who concludes his career with 28,289, including LeBron James, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Karl Malone, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Dirk Nowitzki, Wilt Chamberlain, and Shaquille O’Neal.
“I remember the days when I had nothing, just a ball on the court and a dream of something more,” Anthony stated in the video. But I found solace in basketball. My neighbourhoods, the proudly represented cities, and the supporters who helped me along the journey all had a strong sense of purpose. Because they helped me become Carmelo Anthony, I will always be appreciative of those individuals and places.
However, the moment has come for me to part ways. I’m looking forward to the future as I say this fond farewell to the NBA.
Anthony’s legacy has already been established. He was named one of the top 75 players in NBA history, was invited to 10 All-Star games, won the scoring title twice, and was chosen for the All-NBA team six times before his playing career ended.
“Carmelo Anthony is one of the NBA’s all-time great players and ambassadors,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement on Monday. We commend him on a magnificent 19-year career and eagerly anticipate his induction into the Hall of Fame.
Former teammates of Anthony’s as well as current NBA players congratulated Carmelo on his retirement on social media.
Anthony also understood what it meant to be a winner, despite the fact that he never made it to the NBA Finals and only ever played in one conference final with Denver against the eventual champion Los Angeles Lakers in 2009.
He helped Syracuse win the national title in 2003 and was named the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player. He also assisted USA Basketball in winning three Olympic gold medals: in Beijing in 2008, London in 2012, and Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
Anthony has participated in the most Olympic games of any American men’s player ever with 31 in four appearances. A USA Basketball men’s record in an Olympics is Anthony’s 37 points against Nigeria in the 2012 competitions, along with his 10 3-pointers from that contest and his 13-for-13 performance at the free line against Argentina in 2008.
Anthony is one of the ambassadors to the Basketball World Cup, FIBA’s greatest tournament, which will be contested this summer in the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia, so he will continue to be involved with international basketball for at least a few more months.
Anthony added, “I recall the days when all I had was a ball on the court and a hope of something greater. “However, basketball was my pastime. My neighbourhoods, the proudly represented cities, and the supporters who helped me along the journey all had a strong sense of purpose. They helped me become Carmelo Anthony, and I will always be thankful for them.
The Denver Nuggets selected Anthony with the third overall choice in the 2003 NBA Draught, joining a star-studded class that also includes LeBron James at No. 1, Chris Bosh, who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this summer, at No. 4, and Dwyane Wade, who will be inducted this fall. Soon, Anthony will join them in the Hall of Fame.
He holds a prominent position in Nuggets history as the No. 4 all-time scorer for the team while also being in the top 10 in a number of other significant statistical categories.
He played more than six seasons with the New York Knicks after being traded to them in 2011. In his 19 seasons, he averaged 22.5 points while mostly playing for Denver and the New York Knicks. Especially as a young player who was born in Brooklyn, Anthony has often gushed about his time with the Knicks and what it was like to play in Madison Square Garden.
Anthony remarked, “The Garden,” in 2014. “There’s a reason why they call it The Mecca.”
Anthony had appearances in Oklahoma and Houston as well, but the Bulls released him early in 2019 after trading him to Chicago.
When Anthony was acquired by the Portland Trail Blazers in November 2019, he had been out of action for a whole season. He provided seasoned leadership while also igniting the squad and creating synergy with his teammates. Prior to signing with the Lakers in August 2021, he played a second season with the Blazers.
The 2021–22 NBA season will feature LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and those Lakers who stocked up on seasoned talent by adding Anthony, Russell Westbrook, and a supporting cast of successful NBA veterans. However, the Lakers finished 33-49 and missed the playoffs, thus the season was mostly a failure.
In his retirement speech, he expressed excitement about following his son Kiyan’s progress as a highly regarded high school shooting guard.
People frequently enquire about Anthony’s legacy, he remarked. “None of the accolades or honours I’ve received on the court come to mind first. because basketball has never been the focus of my tale. My kid, my legacy I shall always live on through you. You now have the responsibility of carrying this torch.
